Finding the fault inside a set
In the maintenance depot demo the advisor named Set 07: it needed the lathe 10 times in the last 14 nights. This is the same set's digital twin on its morning run: its speed, its stops and every axle's speed as it brakes. The data is simulated; orbit the train, switch on the systems and scrub through the run.
What's on the screen
- The 3D train. A three-car suburban set: bogies and wheels, brake discs and units, traction motors, the converters under the floor, the air conditioning and pantograph on the roof, the interior behind the windows. The doors open at the stops. "Systems" makes the body clear and shows the systems in their colours.
- The run. 8 stops from Central to Terminal: the speed, the next station and the train's place on the line.
- Braking and the axles. The train's speed and the twelve axles' speeds in the last braking. When an axle turns slower than the train moves, its wheel is sliding; the wheel slide protection (WSP) releases that axle's brake so the wheel turns again. The axle panel counts each axle's slides on this run.
- The advisor. Car 2, axle 3 locks at all 8 stops of this run and slides for 2.8 seconds on average; on the other axles a slip clears in under 0.7 seconds. The WSP sends the release, but the axle doesn't recover: its dump valve sticks. That is where the 52 mm wheel flat the depot's measurement station finds in the evening comes from. The advisor says to replace the valve.
How to try it
- Use the camera buttons to move from the whole train to its side, car 2's bogie and the roof, or drag to orbit.
- Scrub the run back and forth in the bar below; the marks are the stops. As the train brakes for each stop, the braking chart and the axle panel fill.
- "Systems" makes the body clear. "Show the fault" on the advisor card goes to car 2's bogie and marks the faulty axle.
- "Watch the film" plays the same scene full screen as a short walkthrough.
In a real installation
Everything on this page is simulated: the train, the line and the numbers are representative. On a real set the axle speeds, the brake and slide protection records and the systems' states come from the train's own management system and event recorder; we read that data and join it with the depot's and the maintenance records. We don't add sensors to the train.
We run the same analysis on your fleet, with your data. If you are thinking about it, write to us with your sets and the data sources you have.
