Ankara's water, in one model
A digital twin demo for Ankara's water system, on the figures ASKİ, TurkStat and the Court of Accounts publish: the dams as their inflows fell in 2025 and rose in 2026, the water sent to the city, where it goes, and what the dams would have held with fewer losses. A demo built on public data; not an ASKİ product.
What's on the screen
- The province in 3D. Ankara's 25 districts and their borders, a schematic relief (heights exaggerated four times), the city in the middle, the dams and their lakes, the treatment plants and the main lines to the city. Each lake shrinks or grows with its occupancy; the column beside it shows how full the dam is. The flow along the lines quickens with the water sent to the city. The "Use" view raises a column of each district's estimated use.
- Dams. The occupancy and the water of ASKİ's seven dams together, and each dam's occupancy. The days ASKİ published a figure are marked; the days between two figures are interpolated. The percentages are of the capacity ASKİ used that day: a new survey on 1 February 2026 took the dams' total capacity from 1,585.4 to 1,454.7 million m³.
- Water to the city. The water sent to the city in a day, the water flowing into the dams that month, and the sources of the city's water on 10 October 2026.
- Where it goes. The 2021 water balance in the Court of Accounts' audit report: 36.35% of the water into the network is lost, 32.21% as physical losses. The districts' use is an estimate: the water used, split by the districts' population at the end of 2025 (5.91 million in all). Real use varies from district to district and from subscriber to subscriber: according to the municipality, 16% of subscribers use 40% of the water.
- Two years. The water in the dams from January 2025 to October 2026, and the water flowing into them each month: 182 million m³ in 2025, 757 million m³ in 2026 up to 10 October.
- What-if. Two switches: losses down to 20% (ASKİ's goal for 2028) and 10% less use (ASKİ's call in March 2025). The twin replays every day since 1 January 2025: had less water gone to the city, the difference would have stayed in the dams. This is an assumption: with losses at 20% from 1 January 2025, the dams would have held 105 million m³ more on 3 January 2026, 18.9% full instead of 12.3%. The extra water, at that day's use, is about 79 days' worth.
How to try it
- Use the camera buttons to move from the overview to the dams, the city and the whole province, or drag to orbit.
- Scrub through the two years in the bar below: the strip shows the water in the dams, the amber line the lowest occupancy reported (3 January 2026).
- Switch on the "Use" view: each district's estimated use rises as a column.
- Switch on the what-ifs on the What-if card: the lakes, the columns, the cards and the chart change with them. "Go to 3 January 2026" takes you to the day of the lowest occupancy reported, at the dams.
- "Watch the film" plays the same scene full screen as a 26-second walkthrough.
Data and sources
- Dam occupancy, the water in the dams, the water sent to the city and the water flowing into the dams each month: ASKİ, Dams (in Turkish); figures for past dates as ASKİ published them, gathered from news reports that carried them (e.g. Anadolu Agency, 21 August 2025; Hürriyet, 5 January 2026). The roughly 210 million m³ on 4 December 2025 and the 661 million m³ that flowed in during 2023 are from the municipality's statements (AA, 4 December 2025; AA, 7 January 2026).
- The dams, their capacities and the treatment plants: ASKİ, water sources; ASKİ, drinking water treatment.
- The 2021 water balance: Turkish Court of Accounts (Sayıştay), ASKİ audit report for 2021.
- District populations (end of 2025): TurkStat ADNKS, from the Ankara Chamber of Commerce's "Ankara in Figures".
- Subscribers' use: Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, June 2025. The loss goal: Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, 14 January 2026. The call to save: ASKİ, 29 March 2025.

About this demo
This page is ONO's own demo: it is not a product or a view of ASKİ or the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, nor work done with them. The figures are used as published and listed above with their sources. The days between two figures are interpolated; the districts' use is an estimate; the positions of the dams and plants are approximate and the relief is schematic. The what-ifs are assumptions, not forecasts: the loss rate is taken from the 2021 water balance, and less water sent to the city is assumed to be drawn less from the dams; rain, evaporation and the city's other sources are left as they were.
In a real installation the data come from the utility's own systems: the dams' level gauges, the SCADA of the treatment plants and reservoirs, the subscribers' meters and the network's hydraulic model. If you would like to talk about your organisation's data, write to us.
